WordPress Blogs – Information on How to Set Up Your Blog

Posted by Heather Markel on March 23, 2010

I’ve been getting a lot of questions and comments about my blog – the actual layout, etc – so I thought I’d create a post to both answer the questions I’m getting, and hopefully help others out there who might be wondering the same things.

  1. This is a hosted WordPress blog.  I did not create the theme.  It is called Sophisticated Blue if you want to have the same one.  You would select it in “Appearance”, “Themes”.  I have no idea if this theme works with non-hosted blogs, so if you have a blog through WordPress.com, and can’t use this theme, I will presume it may mean that this theme only works with a hosted blog.
  2. I am using about 20 different widgets.
  3. If you want to host your blog, you need to first buy a domain name, and host it with a company that has the software you need to host a WordPress blog.  I use Godaddy – they are awesome with customer service and will happily step you through the whole process.  (I know because I called them 3 separate times!)
  4. If you currently have a NON-hosted blog, with WordPress.com, then you will want to export all your blog posts etc as an XML file.  This is done in your Dashboard in the “Tools” section, where it says “Export”
  5. Once your hosted blog is set up, you will simply IMPORT all your posts, using the Import link under the “Tools” menu.
  6. You may have to import your file several times for everything to load.  It took me 3 attempts to get all my information over here from my other blog.
  7. Once you’re at this point, if you get stuck in any part of the process, use the WordPress.org Forum – http://wordpress.org/support/ - it’s fantastic. Simply register, and then you can ask any questions you have and someone should get back to you fairly quickly!

I hope this helps, and if others out there have more questions, than I will simply expand this blog posting in future to accomodate answers.

New Blog Features – Check Them Out!

Posted by Heather Markel on December 18, 2009

Thought it would be fun to make this blog more interactive.

To that extent, I’ve added a few new pages and invite you to take a look!

Ask Heather” allows you to ask any questions you have about transitioning to a new culture, or about what I do.

Take a Poll” lets you vote on several subjects and see how your results compare to others who have, or will relocate.

Take a Survey” allows you to let me know your most pressing needs, expectations, and issues and get a special gift!

I invite you to check them out, and wish you a wonderful weekend.
